Introduction
    

 

Inner Mongolia University for the Nationalities is situated in Tongliao, a city known as the "Pearl on the Horqin Grassland" in the eastern part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This is not a very large city, since there are only 700,000 people here, but it is rapidly developing. Everything is quite new. This city is beautiful and tidy, with all necessary transport facilities. In the north lies Harbin (9 hours by train), and in the south are Shenyang (4 hours by train) and Dalian (10 hours by train). And it is bordered with Changchun in the east (5 hours by train). To go from Beijing, it’ll take you about 14 hours to get here (14 hours by train, 1.5 hours by air). People here are very friendly and they like making friends with foreigners. Life here is much easier, since the city is sitting in north China. Everything is quite cheaper. The climate here is neither hot in summer nor cold in winter. You can fully enjoy the weather all year round, except in spring, for it is windy in the season.

 

There are more than 16,000 students in the university. The school has been merged into a university from the previous Inner Mongolia National Teachers' College, Inner Mongolia Mongolian Medical College and Jerim Husbandry College. All the colleges were of firm educational bases for over 40 years. The school is run by the state. It is now under the jurisdiction of the regional government, and its competent department is the Educational Department of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This university is featured with regionalism and national characteristics. The university occupies a land area of 2,302 Chinese mu. The constructed building area is 366,000 square meters. There are 2,238 workers and staff members in the university. 757 of them are full-time teachers, including 50 professors and 310 associate professors, 25 of whom are experts enjoying special allowance provided by the government, young and middle-aged experts and the state-model teachers. 11 people are selected as members of the "321 Project" of Inner Mongolia, enjoying first-class and second-class treatments. Among the teaching staff, 107 have obtained Doctor's or Master's degree. 47 teachers are now studying for doctorates and 53 for master's degrees. There are 11,802 undergraduates and junior college graduates, 77 postgraduates, 39 foreign students and 12,496 registered adult students in the university. Now besides the 17 administrative and managing departments, there are 16 colleges and a teaching and research section of Marxism and Leninism under the university. The 16 colleges include: Humanities, Mongolian, Politics and Law and History, Foreign Languages, Mathematics and Computer, Physics and Electro-mechanics, Chemistry, Mongolian Medicine, Clinic Medicine, Agriculture, Animal Science and Technology, Physical Sports, Arts, Educational Science, Vocational Technology, and Adult Education. It also has a library, an analysis and test center, an editorial department of journal and 2 hospitals attached to it. Its scientific research institution consists of 7 research institutes; World History, Condensed State Physics, Computational Physics, Arable Farming, Seeds, and Mongolian Medicine. There are 50 specialties available for general education and 11 specialties available for vocational and technical education. They cover arts, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, history, law, education, and management.

 

 

The university is now entitled to issue Master's degree, recruit overseas students and invite foreign teachers. Now 11 specialties in it have been admitted to enroll postgraduates; 3 subjects of the university have been placed into the key subjects at the provincial level; and 3 courses have been playing an exemplary role in the autonomous region. The journal of the university is publicly issued in 5 editions at home and abroad. The library is a grade - 2 unit of document retrieval for Chinese academic periodic journals. It comprises over 700,700 volumes and more than 1,800 domestic and foreign journals. A data bank of disk and network has been set up in the library .The large-scale electronic reading-room opens to the students every day. In the university, there are also 43 basic and vocational laboratories, equipped with sophisticated facilities available for teaching and scientific research. Its guiding principles for running the university are: "Take root in the eastern part and open to the whole autonomous region, up hold the socialist direction in running the school, abide by the educational law, transform the thought, improve fostering mode and develop the quality education. Pay great attention to teacher - training education, lay stress on the development of the Specialty of Mongolian Medicine, enlarge the Specialties of Agriculture and Livestock and open newly developed specialties so as to produce  multi-functional talents and meet the needs of the market economy. The university will try hard to give full expressions to its local and national features and its professional superiority.
